My friend is taking his wife and kid to Puerto Rico for vacation at the end of August and beginning of September. He and his family will spend a week on the island and spend another week on a cruise visiting the different Carribean islands. I thought that sounded like cool vacation. New Zealand was one of my favorite places I have ever visited. It is a country that has a lot to offer. Auckland was a unique city and there was a lot of great outdoor stuff you can do.

I will be interested on what you decide. I will let you know if I hear of anything good.

I have kept an eye out on the possible Apple/Verizon deal. I too wanted an I-phone but didn’t want to go from Verizon to AT&T. Current contract is over in Apr ‘10. Hopefully it goes through and it could lead to some healthy compeititon in lowering data plan prices.

Oh and in non-blog related news, I met Lisa from Okinawa/BYU-H. small world.

Related to #15: I find this refreshing, as an architect. I take great interest in architecture and being IN a space and the feeling it creates. I love Washington DC because of this: the monuments each have a very different feeling. Most people don’t notice buildings and take for granted the interior spaces they create. I love that I not only notice them, but feel educated enough to critique them. I would love to visit NYC sometime to see some of the notable ones there.
I am not so into nature either, although I enjoy a good landscape and a good sunset.
I would add architecture to your list of professions to dissuade your daughters from. It is very much not what it used to be either and is romanticized ridiculously, when it is in fact driven by profit-hungry clients, uninformed citizen groups, etc. Unless you are a Gehry or a Calatrava, you rarely get to design what YOU want and the pay is not competitive with other professions that take equal schooling.
I think being a teacher would be very rewarding as well, I have that on my “someday” list too…

it’s a shame that you have lost the christmas spirit and blamed it on adulthood. you need to change your mindset and look past the childhood memories. they are fond i’m sure, but your also not a child anymore. you need to find the magic and not place that burden on your children to do that for you.

Jerry – I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to tell you how enjoyable it has been sitting here reading a little bit of it – you are very thoughtful in your writing. I know we haven’t actually talked since like junior high sunday school or something like that, but I’m glad you are doing well and have been successful thus far in life. I’ve been using Mint.com myself for about a year or so and I’ve really liked it too. I used quicken for a number of years but I like that I can access mint anywhere and it updates all my accounts for me. I’m a mint fan as well.

i totally agree – something for everyone at some point…i really do love this city. i didn’t always feel that way (flashback..intern year). but there’s a part of me that has become intertwined with all facets of this amazing vibrant city! we wish you guys would just move into the city for one year…it would be so fun – think of hanna in central park on a daily basis.

I find it far riskier to think that your spouse can take the place of good friendships of regardless of genders. My relationship would suffer if he was the only man in my life. I would say that I have more close male friends than female, in fact, and nothing negative has come of it. But, for 7 years, my partner has been my closest friend of all. I also encourage his friendships, male or female. Without that basic level of trust (in ourselves, each other, and our relationship) I don’t want to be with him or anyone else.

So timely to read your post today! Summertime always reminds me of my European adventures in the past! Today i was lamenting the days of being carefree and letting me go wherever my Eurail Pass would take me. How fun to explore a continent rich in history and aesthetic beauty! Someday that time will come again but for now I have to enjoy the pool and beach and the giggles and screams of 3 children for the summer!
